Welcome to the beautiful and historic city of Annapolis MD, which also serves as the capital of Maryland.

Annapolis, once known as the "Athens of America," is the proud home of the U.S. Naval Academy, St. John´s College (founded in 1696), and provides visitors and locals alike with some of the best boating anywhere in the world. The city also has the distinction of having once served as the capital of the United States -- at point in time when the Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the Revolutionary War.

Located in Anne Arundel County, Annapolis, per the 2000 Census, has a population of 35,838 and encompasses 6.73 square miles. By contrast, Ann Arundel County has a population, again per the 2000 Census, of nearly one-half million persons and a land area of nearly 416 square miles.

Cool Facts:

The Maryland flag contains the combined family crests of the Calvert and Crossland families. The state was founded as an English colony in 1634 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore.

The black and gold designs belong to the Calvert family while the red and white motif comes from the Crossland family. The Maryland flag was officially adopted in1904.

The state flower is the Black-eyed Susan, or for you horticultural buffs -- Rudbeckia hirta. The state bird is the Baltimore Oriole.
